This week in pictures and videos...

As we enter the second week of 'no school' we have had some really uplifting messages from students and staff on how they're keeping busy...

Kieran Street Y12

Deputy Head Boy Kieran gave himself a successful hair cut and has taken up gardening. He's even sent a little message!

Ex-Wales High School Student - Kerry Ladds

Ex pupil Kerry Ladds has been broadcasting daily updates from the Tropical Butterfly House. She is in charge of the birds and posting daily updated on their social media pages. Thank you Kerry for letting us use this video. Check out more here:  Tropical Butterfly House Facebook

Mr Asquith

During this period of self isolation I’ve been attempting to keep a routine to stay as productive as possible.  I’ve been taking part in the Joe Wicks morning PE lessons (see my attempt at this in the separate Joe Wick blog) and then spending the day alternating between work and down time. I’ve tried where possible to use my extra time for positive reasons, so rather than binge watch the Kardashians I’ve picked up my guitar, listened to podcasts, watched documentaries and done further history reading. I’ve been using my state approved exercise time to walk or run. I’ve FaceTimed friends and taken part in a livestream pub quiz as well as dropping off essentials to Chloe’s mum who’s high risk. Here’s to a further period of isolation. Hopefully my marriage remains in tact.

Evie Crowston - Year 8

Evie Crowston put together a very special video in support of all our key workers at the moment and showcased her beautiful singing voice too.  She had the following to say about her video:

I’ve been isolating for around 3 weeks now because I had a temperature and cough a week before school closed. It’s been tricky to get used to but feels normal now. One positive is that I have more time to sing and that always makes me happy. Have a nice day and stay safe! Evie

Miss Dobson

To support me through the days at home I go for a daily walk in the woods near where I live, whether it's raining or not! Having some fresh air gives me a chance to reflect and breaks up a day in front of my laptop. It's very quiet so great for social distancing too! I've also been doing online clubbercise at home but haven't got photos of that!
I've been enjoying teaching from home and taking the meaning of smart casual to a whole other level!  Hoping Mr Di'iasio is ok with me teaching in my slippers when we are back in school!

Niamh Deardon Year 7

Niamh has been keeping her weekly Konga class up every Sunday and the fact that the class is no longer at Dinnington Resource Centre has not stopped her.  Her fitness classes have moved online instead and she has been taking part in these alongside her mum.  Miss Cooper has even been waving hello to her online!  Below are some before and after pics!  See if you can guess which is which! Keeping active is really important at the moment, whether it is inside or by going for a run/walk.  Great to hear Niamh and keep it up!

Mr Conyers goes surfing!

Mr Conyers has been finding entertaining a 4 and 8 year old in between working quite challenging but he seems to have found a solution...surfing! On Saturday, as it was the weekend, they went surfing in the living room!  He did want us to point out that he doesn't usually hang around the house in his running gear - he had just got back from his daily exercise!  Scroll down for video footage...

Mr Oxby
Mr Oxby has sent us his top tips for staying at home.

My top tip is to stay away from screens as much as possible.  Screens have been demonstrated to increase stress and reduce well-being so they should not be a big part of your day! Instead of screen-time, try listening to a podcast. Download an app such as A-cast, spotify or itunes and you can listen while exercising, taking a walk, doing a puzzle, drawing or any other non-screen activity! You can also listen with a family member and discuss what you have heard!

My top-5 podcasts:

Mrs Hayhurst

Last weeks painting of the pink flower was drawn by Mrs Hayhurst! She is clearly even more talented that we realised.  This week she has been spreading some happiness by painting this on her window to make people smile as they walk past.

Kate Sharpe Year 12

During my quarantine, I've been keeping busy in between school work by drawing and making art pieces for my walls. I find drawing to be quite a relaxing thing to do, especially since I've had a lot of time to just throw myself into it. I usually listen to my favourite podcasts whilst I draw or an upbeat album to cheer me up. I feel as though finding a hobby to do, while you're stuck indoors, can be really helpful in keeping your mind engaged as it gives you something to look forward to and can help structure your day. My sister and I have been taking our dog Eddie on regular walks to squeeze in a little bit of exercise, I feel that this is a very important thing to do. Although going outdoors is limited to once a day, getting fresh air is very useful in keeping a positive attitude during these uncertain and stressful times. I would also recommend keeping in contact with friends whether it be over text or Skype, which I do with my friends as we can talk in one big group. This has been the biggest help, in my opinion, as the conversations we have normalise the situation and mirror how happy we felt when we were at school and could see each other everyday.
Thanks for reading and stay positive :)

Miss Taylor - Science
Miss Taylor has also been keeping busy throughout the week and helped us by putting together a little vlog.  Please click on the video below to view it:
